The entry-level electric vehicle (EV) market in India is experiencing a surge in interest, with Tata and MG dominating this space. While Tata's all-electric Tiago has been a prominent player, MG's Comet has managed to offer a more affordable option. Moving into a slightly higher segment, the Tata Nexon has become a leader, and now Volkswagen is gearing up to join this dynamic space.

Volkswagen India Sets Sights on Entry-Level EV Market with New SUV

According to a recent report by Reuters, the Volkswagen Group is actively planning to introduce an entry-level electric SUV in India. Piyush Arora, CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, stated, "We are actively working on an entry-level EV. We are evaluating which VW Group platform can be best adapted to build a compact electric SUV in India."

In recent years, Volkswagen has undergone a significant overhaul of its offerings in India, discontinuing the Polo and introducing new models like the Virtus and Taigun, resulting in steady growth. In the January-December period of 2022, Volkswagen India sold 1,34,667 units, and in 2023, the sales figure reached 1,45,713 units, marking an 8.2 percent growth.

The Skoda brand, under the Volkswagen Group, also witnessed updates with the launch of the Slavia and Kushaq, sharing underpinnings, powertrains, and components with the Virtus and Taigun. If Volkswagen introduces an electric vehicle, a Skoda version may also be expected.

Interestingly, the Skoda Enyaq, the brand's inaugural all-electric car, was recently showcased at the ongoing Bharat Mobility Expo. Having made its global debut in 2022, the Enyaq has been seen in test mules in India, suggesting a potential launch later this year.

As the electric vehicle landscape evolves, Volkswagen aims to make a significant impact in India's entry-level EV market, offering consumers a compelling and eco-friendly alternative. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the Indian automotive industry.
